Everything you need to know about cortisol (and 10 ways to lower it naturally)
Cortisol is often seen as the stress hormone. Something you should keep as low as possible. But that's not true. Cortisol is essential. It helps you wake up, focus, and perform. The problem only arises when cortisol remains structurally elevated and the body can no longer properly downshift. Many people are therefore in a kind of intermediate state: not fully in stress, but never truly recovering either. And you feel that.

What is cortisol?
Cortisol is a hormone produced in the adrenal glands and is part of your stress response. It helps your body release energy, stay alert, and react quickly to stimuli. In the morning, cortisol naturally rises to wake you up. Throughout the day, it should slowly decrease so that your body can move towards relaxation and sleep. You cannot function without cortisol. But you also cannot function without recovery.
Cortisol works closely with your nervous system, which generally has two modes.
Sympathetic (action)
Your body enters a state of activation. Your heart rate increases, your focus improves, and energy becomes immediately available. This is the mode in which you perform, react, and act.
Parasympathetic (recovery)
Your body switches back. Digestion, recovery, hormone balance, and the immune system are given space. This is the mode in which you build up. Health does not arise from always being calm, nor from constantly performing. It arises from the ability to switch between these two.
At its core, stress is a cycle: stimulus, action, release, and recovery. What is often forgotten is that it is primarily that release that is missing. We experience stress, but we no longer move it out. It remains mental. Your body receives the signal that something needs to happen, but not the signal that it is over. The result is not extreme stress, but a chronic mild activation. Your system remains "on," cortisol remains elevated, and recovery fails to occur. This is often underestimated, as it doesn't feel like panic, but like a constant undercurrent of unrest, fatigue, or tension.
What can you do?
Not simply to lower cortisol, but to teach your system to switch again.
1. NSDR (Non Sleep Deep Rest / Yoga Nidra)
NSDR is a form of deep relaxation where your body recovers while you remain conscious. You lie still and follow a body scan, moving your attention through your body. This helps your nervous system switch to recovery and can contribute to deeper relaxation throughout the day. Do this for 10 to 20 minutes a day.
2. Cold exposure
A brief cold stimulus, such as a 1–2 minute cold shower (10–15°C), consciously activates your stress system. Relaxation then follows. You train your body to switch back faster.
3. Sauna / heat
Heat acts as a controlled stress stimulus with a recovery effect.
Guideline:
- 70–90°C
- 10–20 minutes
- possibly 2–4 rounds
After the sauna, your body switches to relaxation. That phase is where the effect lies.
4. Gut health and serotonin
Your gut and brain are constantly connected. Approximately 90% of your serotonin is produced in your gut. This plays a role in mood, calmness, and stress regulation.

5. Light management
Your biological clock is controlled by light. Morning light helps your cortisol rhythm. Evening light, however, can disrupt it.
Practical:
- morning: 10–20 min outside
- evening: dim lights
- fewer screens
- red light therapy
6. Breathing & HRV
HRV (Heart Rate Variability) is the variation between your heartbeats and indicates how flexibly your body deals with stress. High HRV = better switching between stress and recovery. 7. 6 seconds in / 6 seconds out
A simple application:
- 6 sec in
- 6 sec out
- 10–20 minutes
This puts your nervous system in a recovery state.
8. Meditation
Meditation helps your system become less reactive to stress. Not by removing stress, but by changing your reaction to it.
9. Intermittent fasting (with context)
Time-restricted eating can contribute to rhythm and energy. But: fasting is also a stressor. With a lot of stress, it can be counterproductive.

10. Forest bathing (time in nature)
Time in nature reduces stimuli and helps your nervous system automatically switch to recovery. No goal. No phone. Just being present. This is often missing in daily life.
